this Tide advert uses many commonly used media devices which can be seen here very clearly. when first looking at the advert, you immediately notice that the images show a very typical 1950's style housewife hugging a box of Tide. From this, it should be noted noted that the images and text are all hand drawn which is evidence that the advert was made in the 1950's period when all advertising was drawn by hand. this is also backed up by the depicted housewife being shown as the stereotypical hard working wife who would do all of the chores and housework while her husband is working and making money for the family, and from her clothing which is very reminiscent of the period.

Countinung to look at the image of the housewife, we also see that she is hugging the box of Tide with small love hearts just above her. this was clearly done by the artist to represent that the housewife values Tide for how it manages to clean her washing so well. this is also suggested by the colour of the main heading above her being a bright red which is often a connotation of love and romance in the media and pop-culture in general. this whole connotation would be in line with Stuart Hall's reception theory being that the preferred reading that the producer and artist want you to feel is that tide is exactly what women love when looking for something to wash their family's clothing with. However this may not be the case with the entire audience due to a number of factors including race, gender, financial situation and other factors which would lead to parts of the audience disagreeing with the advert and thus having an oppositional reading to the advert. in this case the viewer may not think that Tide is effective enough or that women don't like Tide and that wives would prefer to use other products instead. this and many other reasons can lead to people not wanting to buy the product in the first place.

looking at the layout of the advert, we can clearly see that the artist chose to put important facts about the product in bold and has noticeably put the main supposed selling point that tide is what women love in the largest and boldest text in the advert which would be more likely to catch the viewers eye. the placement of the text is also in correlation with how people read things in a z pattern by starting at the top and reading from left to right and then using the same system when reading the text bellow. this is clearly reflected thoroughly in the layout of the advert with the main talking points of tide being at the top and then by having more information bellow which goes into more depth about how well Tide cleans sheets.
